High school hobby turns into a college scholarship for Fluckiger

Who would have thought that someone who attended volleyball tryouts as a high school freshman, just because she was bored and thought it looked like fun would one day receive a scholarship to play at college? Amy Fluckiger “Fluke” as her teammates call her, from Logan, Utah, started in just that way.
“I wasn’t sure how far volleyball would go, being just a hobby, but after coming down to tryout; coach offered me a scholarship, I was excited. This looked like a pretty good school and all the girls I met were so amazing,” Fluckiger stated. “I decided to come down to Price and play and here I am again, for my second year.” She started playing for CEU in 2002, after she graduated from Logan High School. Her favorite memory from playing on the CEU team was when the team took a trip to California. They placed third in the tournament, played really good, and got to visit Disneyland. Emilee Madsen, teammate, commented, “Wherever we go, she has these crazy glasses she picks up, then she does funny impressions. There are lots of funny stories I could tell.”
Volleyball is more than what the spectators see from the stands. Each day for two and a half to three hours the team runs, drills, scrimmages against each other, lifts weights, and then conditions some more. All the practice does pay off. Madsen confirmed, “Fluke really had to earn her position on the team this year, I think she did. She is by far the best blocker. She is going to be a real key factor in our amazing season this year.” Amy Collette, another teammate commented, “Fluke is an awesome team player, she has dang nice legs, hops like mad all over the court. She is just so good as a middle and she is a killer hitter man!”
Although Fluckiger has all the skills needed, along with the aggression and effort, there could be one thing to distract her from her game – mascots! No school mascot, rooting for CEU, should come close to Fluckiger, she is terrified of them! Last year when Jed Lloyd was the CEU mascot, she ran across the court and would not come near him.
Fluckiger is majoring in nursing and would like to attend either USU or Weber next year. “I don’t know if I’ll play volleyball, I’d like to, but nursing is very time consuming.” She is excited for the upcoming season and expects the team will do well, “I think that we will be able to beat all our rivals this year. Those are usually the best games, when the adrenaline is running, and you’re excited to play them, you usually play better. The crowds are usually more into it and so the cheering really gets you going. I think this season will be really awesome. We have all we need for a winning season this year and we’re gonna prove it.”
