Three receive Utah Coalition for the Advancement of Minorities in HE scholarships

The Utah Coalition for the Advancement of Minorities in Higher Education will hold their 13th annual Scholarship Banquet (UCAMHE) on Nov. 21 and award three CEU students scholarships. The three winners from CEU were first place, Phyllis Whitehorse, second place, Romer Ferrer, and third place, Gypsie Delgado. Each award winner will receive a check from UCAMHE.
The banquet will be in the Student Services Building on Salt Lake Community College on Redwood Road. David Richardson, SLCC’s vice president of academic affairs will be the keynote speaker. Commissioner Cecelia Foxley of Utah System of Higher Education will also speak and congratulate scholarship recipients. Richard Kendell, USHE’s next commissioner will also be in attendance.
The three CEU winners join the other 33 scholarship winners from the 11 public/private colleges and universities in Utah. Students are selected based on academic/vocational achievement, demonstrated leadership in school, community or other service activities. UCAMHE is a non-profit organization established to promote and advocate quality education for people of color and/or disadvantages backgrounds. The organization is a public/private collaboration established for the purpose of increasing post-secondary educational participation and success of individuals within the under represented Utah communities of color.
Whitehorse is a native of Blanding, Utah. Whitehorse is working for San Juan School District as a para-professional educator and attending classes at the CEU-San Juan campus. Her goal is to get her AS & BS degree as a certified special education teacher. Whitehorse works with an after school program (Century Twenty One) helping students in all subject areas. She promotes and advocates a quality education for students at San Juan High School and with disadvantaged Native American students who qualify for the program she works for and helps build their self-confidence. “Whitehouse is an excellent representative of students facing and overcoming challenges in order to pursue their education and achieve their vocational goals. She has also demonstrated herself to be committed to obtaining her education in order to improve her quality of life and the lives of those she comes in contact with,” said the UCAMHE committee.
Romer Ferrer was born in the Philippines and resides in Price with his wife Jennifer and daughter Kaylie Sue. Ferrer is a currently finishing his degree in criminal justice. He is the ASCEU non-traditional chair which consists of married students, single parents and students over the age of 25. Ferrer is a leader of program called American Reads and recruits college students to do volunteer hours at the local elementary schools. Ferrer is volunteering his time at Miss Hull’s third grade class at Castle Heights Elementary School in Price. He enjoys serving his fellow students at CEU and the elementary school.
Gypsie Delgado is from Tooele, Utah. She enjoys hanging out with her family, friends, taking pictures, helping others, and especially writing.
Delgado is editor-in-chief of The Eagle, ASCEU public relations chair, president of the women’s softball club, and vice president of CEU’s Delta Epsilon Chi (DEX) chapter.
She is planning on finishing her associate’s degree at CEU and majoring in mass communications. She eventually plans on becoming a magazine journalist and someday owning her own magazine.
