Utah Opera Apprentice Artists host program at CEU and Civic Auditorium this weekend

Price residents can enjoy opera and musical theatre right in their own backyard as Utah Opera Apprentice Artists perform for school and community groups in the area during the week of November 10-14. The week-long residency introduces students to opera through performances and workshops, and will culminate in a free public concert on Friday, November 14.
The Utah Opera Apprentice Artists are an integral part of Utah Symphony & Opera’s residency program, which has been developed to serve all age groups in communities throughout the Intermountain West.
Today, (November 13) they will present “Opera Up Close” to fine arts students at the College of Eastern Utah. During this special program, the artists will sing some of their personal favorites and discuss issues facing young people who pursue careers in the performing arts.
This week ends with a free public concert on Friday, November 14 at 7:30 p.m. in the Price Civic Auditorium. The first half of the concert will be a performance of Illusions/Ilusiones, an award-winning opera written, composed and designed by area high school students. This emotionally-charged piece is set in the present and focuses on a teenage boy and girl in conflict with older family members and with each other. Their grandparents, based on the grandparents of real students, become their mentors as they seek self-understanding and meaningful relationships with those around them.
The second half of the concert will feature selections from American musical theatre, including West Side Story, Oklahoma!, Kismet and Annie Get Your Gun.
