Volunteer Spotlight

This archived article was written by: Christine Olsen

Kerron Mitchell is a sophomore from Altamont, Utah. She is the third out of six children. Mitchell came to CEU because “it is close to home, but far enough away.” Her favorite class is ceramics and she wants to be a dietary nutritionist. Along with her friend Megan Arko, Mitchell serves as the SUN Center student co-leader over Random Acts of Simple Kindness (RASK) and One-Time Projects. She chose these projects because they offer a variety of service and because “we can help with everything from little kids learning to read to making food boxes for the food bank.” Mitchell first got involved with service in high school and has been doing it ever since. She does service because “it’s awesome! We can help people, meet people and have fun all at once.”
Mitchell has been a SUN Center student leader since last October when she headed the Habitat for Humanity projects. She has also volunteered with Kids at Heart and many other one-time projects. Her first project this year was the Road Rally. “We went to Wal-Mart to do RASK, then to the Carbon County Food Bank, and then to Active Re-Entry. It turned out great and was a lot of fun.” Her next project is a community health fair which will be held on October 6-7. If you are interested in volunteering with any of the numerous one-time projects call 613-5933 or 613-5945.
Mitchell’s other hobbies include watching movies, going for walks, spending time with friends, talking and laughing and doing things with her hands like crochet and ceramics. She looks up to her parents and has always admired George Washington. Her most embarrassing moment happened in ninth grade when she was de-pantsed at a party.
Kathy Murray, SUN Center director, says, “it is such a pleasure working with Kerron. She is so enthusiastic about her projects and always does well!”
Mitchell has the following advice for other students: “Getting involved is the best thing you can do!”
