Lady Eagles tally first conference win, look to take frustrations out on NIC this weekend

The College of Eastern Utah’s women’s basketball team has struggled since Christmas break, winning only two games. During the past few months, the team has lost some key players to a number of different causes, including a broken foot and a torn ACL.
After fall semester, the team started their holidays with a tournament in Las Vegas, Nev. starting December 28. They played against Brookdale Community College, beating their opponent 64-56. Jana Glover led the team with 16 points, followed by Whitney Fardig with nine and Veva Whitear with seven points and eight rebounds.
After getting off to a good start, the team played Seward Community College who are 17-0 this season and ranked second in the nation. The Eagles lost this game 62-50. “The team played very hard in this game,” said head Coach Dave Paur. “It was probably the best game we played all year.” Janeen Nelson had a good game with 13 points, followed by Glover with 11 and Fardig with nine points and seven rebounds.
After losing to Seward in the tournament, the team got ready to play conference foe Dixie State College. The team didn’t show well in this game, losing 77-55. Veva Whitear led the team with 13 points followed by Glover and Fager who both had 10 points. Cassidy Dawes had four blocks in the game.
The Eagles started off the New Year and back to conference play on the road with a game against the College of Southern Idaho on the January 5. The team lost the game 82-47. Glover led the team with 11 points, while Fardig had 10 and Nelson had nine.
The next game that the Lady Eagles played was against North Idaho College. The result was a devastating loss by the score of 87-48. Krisyln Wallace and Glover led the team with 11 points each, with Fardig pitching in 7 points and 9 rebounds.
The team finally got on the positive track last weekend, by beating Colorado Northwestern by the final score of 60-54. In this game, which was much better played than the last two, Nelson had 16 points, Glover 13 and Wallace 12 points. Fardig had an outstanding game with nine points, nine rebounds and three blocks.
“The team has been plagued by injury all year,” said Paur. “There have been more injuries in just this year than any other year I can remember.” He also said that he has had to shuffle the starting lineup for the last few weeks, which can’t help the situation at hand. “They’re struggling this year,” he said. “They are having a hard time adjusting to injuries.”
“Last year the team won 23 games and although that may not happen this year, we are still going to keep trying every game,” he said. He added that some of the players that were out with injuries should be back within the next couple of weeks.
The ladies continue their home stand this weekend when they play North Idaho College Friday and Saturday night at 5:30 pm.
