Sidney Crosby is considered by many to be the next super star in hockey. Crosby, whose nickname is The Next One, is the player Wayne Gretzsky picked to break his scoring record.
He begins his first season in the NHL this year when he makes his debut for the Pittsburgh Penguins. Previous to this season, Crosby played in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League with Rimouski Oceanic. While playing with Oceanic, he had 120 goal and 183 assists.
His immense skills were first seen when playing for the Canadian Junior Team, where he helped his native Canada win the Junior World Cup. In the World Cup tournament, Crosby scored six goals and added three assists.
Crosby, who was born in Halifax, Canada, admits that when he was younger he wanted to be a goalie. In the September addition of ESPN the Magazine he is quoted as saying. “I think every little kid does [want to play goalie] because of the equipment. It looks like fun.” Luckily his father thought that he would have more fun skating and hitting the puck.
Many people hope Crosby can be the one to save hockey, after a season-long lockout. He says, “When people say I’m going to save hockey, it’s a challenge … I’m not going to shy away from it.”
Crosby has immeasurable talent and has proven that he can compete with veteran players. He said himself that he has always played against older players and is looking forward to the challenge that the NHL offers. Crosby is exactly what hockey needs right now. He is a bright, young player who makes himself available to the media, can produce amazing numbers and is just a likeable guy.
Crosby said he would have been glad to play anywhere. He would be lying if he said he didn’t want to play with Mario Lemiuex. Crosby first met Lemiuex, who is the owner and also center for the Penguins, while the two trained in Los Angeles over the summer.
I would now like to shift gears, and leave the world of hockey behind. I think that the rest of September and October will be two of the most exciting months in sports. I say this because, there is an amazing push for the playoffs in baseball with half of the teams still in the chase for the coveted wildcard.
Only 1.5 games separate the Red Sox from the hated Yankees. The Sox and Yankees will finish the regular season playing each other three final times. There is the World Series in October, with the Red Sox hoping to defend their title.
The post-lockout NHL season starts on Oct. 5. I’m not sure how many people share my excitement at hockey returning, but the season should be exciting since they have made rule changes and implemented a shootout so games will no longer tie.If that gets you to watch, yes, there will be fighting.
With the NFL season started, these three sports combined will make a happy sports writer over the next months.
