College revises academic standards

CEU has changed the academic standards in the catalogue this year. This is not an official policy change, but a change in how the academic advising office will react to students that fall behind.
“It seems like a good idea, I’m glad the administration cares that much about the students to give us letters and warnings.” said Nick Critchlow, freshman.
Students must maintain at least a 2.0 grade point average in order to remain in good academic standing and graduate. A system has been set up to notify students that are in danger of not meeting standards and to help them.
A student will receive an early alert if an instructor identifies he or she is not attending classes or is experiencing academic difficulty. A phone call or a letter from the academic advising office will notify the student.
By the revised standards, it will be highly encouraged for the student to meet with an academic adviser and plan a way to complete the course successfully or to consider dropping the course.
A warning will be given if a student’s GPA for the semester falls below 2.0. The student will receive a letter from the academic advising office encouraging him or her to see an academic adviser.
After the warning is issued, the adviser will help them identify the problems that are preventing them from succeeding academically and offer recommendations or referrals.
Should a student’s GPA fall below 2.0 for two consecutive semesters the student will be put on academic probation.
In addition, a hold will be placed on the student’s record. The hold will make it impossible for the student to register for classes the next semester or for them to add or drop classes.
The hold will only be removed when the student attends an academic success workshop or meets with an adviser on an individual basis and develops a plan to improve academically.
Any time a student’s GPA falls below 2.0 after that a hold will be placed on his or her record. Withdrawal from CEU will be discussed as an option should this happen.
“I think the new standards are a good idea. This will give students a reason to perceiver and do better to from being given probation,” said CEU sophmore Cj Jelsma.
