After a bye weekend on April 7th and 8th, a well-rested CEU squad took the field against the league leading Eagles of CSI on the 21st of April. Led by the offensive dominance of Colton Ray who went three for three at the plate. The eagles, “came out flat, and they came out fired.” According to Frank Ori, CEU assistant coach. The game was dropped 11 to CEU’s 1.
Jayson Madsen took the mound in Marcus Hamatake’s place due to health problems, in the second game of the double header. Only three CEU hits where allowed being achieved by Tyler Jones, One Taumoepeau, and Eric Morgan. This ended in another disgracing of CEU as they where shutout 7-0.
At the brake of a new day things were looking to be heading in a better direction for CEU’s men. As Bryan (Goose) Smith toed the rubber, and being relieved by the big southpaw Jake Bankowski, together keeping CEU and CSI scores tied 7-7 as they began the seventh inning. Then with runners on second and third, on the next pitch, the ball was drilled for a three-run homer. One more run was scored off of the Closer Levi Watts for CEU’s loss of 11-7.
Crosby Oldham took the initiative in the last game hitting two out of two. On the hill was Ty Penrod who threw an excellent game according to Ori, he went on to say, “I am pleased with Ty Penrod’s performance this year.” This combination while overpowering to most teams was not quite enough for CEU who fell out of the game on a Ray error in center, This was the first error for Ray who came into CEU as a shortstop, Ori stated. Then “the wheels fell off.” Ori mentioned about the rest of the game in which the CEU team failed to achieve victory, losing 12-3 to a team with a former CEU pitcher Zach Privitt on the mound.
Some CEU performances worthy of mention, include Greg Farnsworth, and Ty Penrod. Farnsworth is representing CEU on the conference leaders board with a impressive slugging Percent of .537, as well as holding the sixth spot on the league batting champs list with a whopping .358 batting average. Penrod, CEU’s hard-throwing right hander, showing off his nasty breaking pitch fooling batters into leading the conference in striking batters out looking. With a tremendous 21 on the season, also sitting at 55 total strike outs and taking the fifth spot over all in league leading throwers. Another leader for the CEU team is Hametake who is leading the Eagles with a 3.14 earned run average with nine appearances and 48.2 innings pitched, seconded by Evan who has tossed his way to a 3.34 in 35 innings pitched spanning nine trips to the hump.
Ori commenting about the CEU baseball season thus far said that it has been a rather disappointing season, but we’re not done yet. We have eight games left and could end the season with a .500 average. So don’t count your Eagles out of the post season quite yet.
Next CEU, has away games on April 28 and 29 in Carson City Nevada as the swoop in on Western Nev. Then again in the season finale bout with Colorado Northwestern Community College in Rangley, Col.
