April 26, 2006 was a significant day for College of Eastern Utah Athletics. A large group gathered at the CEU baseball field prior tothe CEU vs. CSI baseball game last Saturday for the purpose of officially naming the field the Colosimo/Carlson Field.
The group of 35-college officials, community leaders, friends and family joined with the CEU Golden Eagle baseball team to unveil the new monument and plaque recognizing the efforts of former Price City Mayor Lou Colosimo (who has since passed away) and local philanthropist and athletic booster Jerry Carlson in totally refurbishing the Price City baseball field.
Former head baseball coach Erik Madsen and Athletic Director Dave Paur were given $10,000 to do whatever they wanted with it.
So they took $3,000 to dynamite the area, and 7,000 to build bleachers and such.
The city and college have a long-term lease agreement on the field.
Welcoming remarks and a brief history of the project were made by President Ryan Thomas.
Thomas praised the vision of the city fathers and the CEU Athletic Department in the joint project which brought together many individuals and groups to make the field what it is today. Thomas particularly singled out the leadership of former Mayor Lou Colosimo for his vision and cooperation for the process and Jerry Carlson who donated a majority of the funding for the project.
Also recognized for their contributions in the way of technical expertise and labor were Terry Jordan and Kevin Dunn.
Much of the labor was provided by the CEU baseball coaching staff and the players themselves.
The field continues to be cared for both by Price city, Terry Jordan and the CEU coaching staff and baseball team.
Mayor Joe Piccolo, a CEU Alumni Board member, arranged for the city to donate the beautiful 10-foot stone upon which the plaque is mounted and the help and expertise of City Engineer Gary Sontag. A city crew placed the monument.
Remarks were made by Pat Colosimo, wife of former Mayer Colosimo, and Jerry Carlson. Colosimo’s remarks included thanks to all involved in the project which was initiated by the CEU Alumni Association president Lamont Arnold.
She also illustrated the appropriateness of this action because of Lou’s love of the community and especially baseball.
Carlson’s remarks centered on the cooperative nature of the project, giving credit and thanks to the many groups and individual which made both the field and the monument possible.
“If you build it they will come and if you dream it you can do it,” Paur added.
