The Eastern Utah Wind Symphony, a college-community ensemble at College of Eastern Utah, will present the final concert of its 2005-06 season on Thursday, April 27, at 7:30 p.m. in the CEU Geary Theatre. Also performing will be a special guest ensemble, the Whitehorse High School Band from Montezuma Creek, Utah.
The Whitehorse Band will open the concert with three selections. Marching Song is a traditional work by a 20th-century English master, Gustav Holst. Next will be When the Stars Began to Fall, a setting of the spiritual My Lord What a Mornin’ that composer Fred J. Allen dedicated to the memory of his mother. To close its portion of the program, the Whitehorse musicians will perform Highland Legend, a recent piece by John Moss that utilizes ancient Scottish folk styles.
The concert will continue with the Eastern Utah Wind Symphony performing Rhythm Stand, an interesting new piece by a prominent, contemporary American composer, Jennifer Higdon. Traditional works by four 20th-century English composers will follow: “Prelude” from Little Suite No. 1 by Malcolm Arnold, “My Bonny Boy” from English Folk Song Suite by Ralph Vaughan Williams, “Song of the Blacksmith” from Second Suite in F by Gustav Holst, and “Finale” from An Original Suite by Malcolm Arnold. An appealing march by Karl L. King, Hosts of Freedom, will conclude the Wind Symphony’s part of the program.
The Eastern Utah and Whitehorse bands will join forces for the final portion of the concert. First, Whitehorse conductor Kim Schaefer will lead the combined bands in Ancient Ritual, a piece of contrasting styles that is reminiscent of mankind’s past. The program will end in grand style with Eastern Utah conductor Gregory Benson directing the musicians in a medley of well-known songs from The Sound of Music.
The April 27 band concert is sponsored by the CEU Department of Music. Admission is free.
