Women battle ups and downs, looking for wins

This was a lopsided contest with the Eagles dominating in every category. During their previous game in the BDAC Jan. 26th, the Spartans gave the Eagles some competition in the first half and were down only one point at halftime. In this game the Eagles jumped on the Spartans like Melanie Nelson on a math problem.
The Eagle sophomores got it done in a big way with Kendra Dalebout leading all scorers with 21 points. Dalebout drained five threes and was a perfect two for two from the line. She also had three rebounds, a block and a steal.
Erin Richardson went five out of 10 from the field including knocking down a couple threes and picking up two from the line for 14 points. Richardson also dished a John-Stockton-like eight assists and picked the Spartans pocket three times.
Maquette Potts finally had the kind of game she is capable of. She had 13 points, going four out of 13 from the floor with one three pointer, and added four points from the free-throw line. She was everywhere pulling down 11 rebounds, handing out five assists, one block and five steals. In case you missed it … that’s a double double baby. Alisa Morley seemed to have gotten the Deseret News bump, scoring six points, getting four rebounds and a block.
The next night the Eagles defeated the Spartans 78-67 and again the sophomores stepped it up with all of them getting into double digits. Brandi King had 10, Richardson 15, Dalebout 11, and for the second night in a row, Potts scores a double double with 14 points and 13 rebounds.
Freshman Kasey Day made her presence known and picked up a double double, scoring 13 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
College of Southern Idaho is always tough but this year according to Coach Dave Paur, they have “more depth at the post than ever, four of their post players will play in Division one.”
On Feb. 8 CSI came into the BDAC and dominated both ends of the court, handing the lady Eagles a 63-85 loss.
“You want a quote Paur asks? They [CSI] are big, talented and deep, their inside presence shut us down completely. They were able to deny Dalebout the ball underneath and we did not shoot well.”
CSI’s Maddy Plunkett, an import from Australia, and Soana Lucet from New Caledonia controlled the paint and scored 44 points between them … more than half the total points scored by the team. They also pulled down 26 rebounds collectively, again more than half of the 52 rebounds the team had. Their 26 rebounds were two shy of CEU’s total of 28.
Richardson got into double-digit territory with 16 but the rest of the team was shut down. As a team CEU, shot 31 percent to CSI’s 47 percent.
The next night was the same … only worse. CSI jumped on CEU early and never let up. They won easily 100-67.
Again Plunkett and Lucet dominated anywhere near the basket getting 16 and 20 points respectively and pulling down six rebounds apiece.
Veronica Siqueiros was the only CEU player to get into double digits with 11 points. Nine of those points came from beyond the arc where she was three for three.
“We didn’t match up very well with them,” said Paur “we shot 24 percent and that is not going to get it done against CSI. They have a good shot at going undefeated this season,” he continued.
“There is a chance we will play them in the first game of the tournament so we have been changing our offense to counter their big players. We will try to take quicker outside shots after initially driving inside. Our half-court defense also needs work,” Paur finishes.
This coming Friday and Saturday Feb. 15-16 are the last home games of the season. Friday night the ladies play in the BDAC at 5:30 p.m. taking on North Idaho College.
Saturday at 1 p.m. is the last home game of the season with the Eagles once again taking on NIC in the BDAC. If you come Friday night admittance to Saturday’s games are $1.
