Swing dancing, which was extremely popular in the ’50s, has made a tremendous comeback recently. Though it didn’t really ever die out, it has been pushed to the back burner as new styles of dancing have taken the stage; from disco, to hip-hop and all the others in between. But more and more we are returning to the oldies. Rockabilly bands are becoming increasingly popular, along with the simple yet stylish clothes.
In the club, students are able to enjoy a carefree environment of laughs and fancy footwork. Those who come to swing club learn the basic moves including the cat-scratch and the pretzel. Those more adventurous are able to learn aerial stunts such as the candlestick, back-flip and suicide (just to name a few).
Coming to swing club is free. Andrew Perkins, CEU student and longtime fan of swing club said, “It’s so much fun. Why go to the gym when you can get a workout and have tons of fun doing it.” And he’s right. Dancing is an aerobic workout that works most muscles in the body. You will walk away with a sense of accomplishment and maybe even a date.
Swing Club is a constructive activity that gets students out of the dorms and interacting with others of the opposite sex. How can you go wrong? Quoting the 1954 classic movie Twice Blessed, “One musn’t be narrow minded in these matters.” So if you find yourself sitting at home on a Thursday evening with nothing to do, come by the old SAC ballroom for a night of music and dancing and discover a great way to stay in shape.
