A College of Eastern Utah van carrying two students and one professor wrecked on Sept. 6 while returning from a mountain biking trip in Deer Valley. Professor Jon Krum was driving his students from his mountain biking class, Jacob Petty and Alex Judd, when the accident occurred.
“We were traveling south on University Ave. at 45 MPH when we came to the intersection of 2230 North, an individual decided he could cut in front of me and our cars came in contact one with another,” says Krum.
The three had returned from a biking expenditure on Black Diamond terrain, which are the most difficult trails to ride, and were now encountering adventure. Judd gives his account from a passenger perspective, “It was like being slow motion. We really couldn’t avoid it.”
After Krum made certain the students were not harmed, “Everyone was fine we were all wearing our seat belts,” he left his vehicle to assess the condition of the other vehicle; an elderly couple in a rental car.
“The passenger woman said she was a little flustered but she did not require medical attention and the driver of the vehicle inquired, ‘My hell! How fast were you going?’ I then replied, ‘I am assuming you do not need medical attention … I will call the police so they can give you a ticket.’ ”
The police then arrived and assessed the two vehicles, and the other driver was given a citation for a failure to yield. Then, “We changed the tire, and made it home an hour later than we had planned.”
This was the first of three mountain biking trips Krum will take his students on. The class will also mountain bike in San Rafael and Moab.
