Carbon native named captain of nationally ranked BYU Cougars
Jan Jorgensen is probably Carbon High School’s biggest football protege of all time. The Helper, Utah native now stars as BYU’s defensive end and team captain.
Jorgensen, who is only a junior, is already being recognized for his amazing talent on the football field. As a freshman, he started all 13 games for the Cougars and was a significant part of their defense that ranked tenth nationally. This year he received Academic All-Mountain West Conference honors.

Jan Jorgensen is probably Carbon High School’s biggest football protege of all time. The Helper, Utah native now stars as BYU’s defensive end and team captain.
Jorgensen, who is only a junior, is already being recognized for his amazing talent on the football field. As a freshman, he started all 13 games for the Cougars and was a significant part of their defense that ranked tenth nationally. This year he received Academic All-Mountain West Conference honors.
As a sophomore he anchored a very impressive defensive line and was ranked among the top 10 nation wide in sacks. Jorgensen also broke the Mountain West Conference single-season sack record with 14. This year he received Academic All-Mountain West Conference honors again, but was also presented with the Bart Oates Big Brother Award; and was named to the All-Mountain West Conference First Team, and the Sports Illustrated Honorable Mention All-American Team.
This year there are also great things expected from Jorgensen. He is a candidate for All-America honors, the Rotary Lombardi Award, the Lott Trophy, Defensive Player-of-the-Year and All-Mountain West Conference honors. He was also named to Nationalchamps.net Preseason All-America second team, and was given Preseason All-Mountain West Conference honors.
With all the success Jan Jorgensen has already had and with two more seasons to play for the Cougars, expect to see his name pop up even more often. For one, he only needs 19 more sacks to become BYU’s all-time sack leader. The Carbon High graduate has gone down in BYU history, and is looking to make the next step into the NFL.
