Last week, SUN Center director Kathy Murray picked up her mail and found an exciting surprise. The SUN Center was notified that they received a $13,000 grant from George S. and Dolores Dore Eccles Foundation.
Murray and last year’s SUN presidency applied for the grant in the spring and was anxiously waiting for the funds to carry out many of this year’s service projects. The grant will directly fund the SUN Center’s projects, leaders and volunteers. The activities include the annual Breakaway spring trip, volunteer recognition and many local projects sponsored by the center.
Limited funds from the college are given to support the SUN Center so the grant was greatly appreciated and made possible many of the projects put on hold prior to receiving the grant. Upcoming projects that benefitted directly from the grant include the Hunger Banquet and the Bread and Soup Nights held every Monday in November from 5-6:30 p.m.
This year Maren Hebdon is SUN Center president with Jenny Cawley, Janalee Keller, and Mikenzi Bentley as vice presidents. There are also 17 student leaders who are in charge of community and campus-based projects.
They meet and work with community members, agencies or groups to define service needs, set up projects and publicize and gather volunteers. After they complete service they take time to reflect on their projects with their volunteers.
SUN Leaders include Ben Bjarnson, Justin Brackett, Kevin Bunnell, Amy Devitt, Max Fletcher, David Goodrich, Allison Guy, Jenna Jepson, Jessica Johnson, Kristy Layton, Jacob Major, Kent Olsen and Brett Wells.
