Golf team drops matches to SLCC
The College of Eastern Utah’s golf club started their season with two losses. The first loss came Oct. 10, when the club held a tournament at the Carbon County Country Club against Salt lake Community College. On Oct. 24, the team headed up to River Oaks Golf Course in Sandy to take on SLCC again. Unfortunately they lost again.

The College of Eastern Utah’s golf club started their season with two losses. The first loss came Oct. 10, when the club held a tournament at the Carbon County Country Club against Salt lake Community College. On Oct. 24, the team headed up to River Oaks Golf Course in Sandy to take on SLCC again. Unfortunately they lost again.
The first match was full of ups and downs for the team. Ryan Nelson, president of the club, was the low scorer for the team finishing 18 holes with a 76. It had to call in one of its alternates, Dax Upton, because a player was injured the night before the tournament. Upton played a decent tournament. This was an amazing accomplishment for him because it was only his second match play format tournament.
The team at the Carbon Country Club consisted of; Ryan Nelson in the number-one spot, Shayne Burke in the number two spot, Jordan Peterson in the three spot, Mike Smith in the four spot, Parker Alleman was the fifth spot, Brett White was in the six spot and Dax Upton was in the seventh spot.
The team ended up losing to the Bruins with a score of 317 (CEU) to 292 (SLCC). Nelson said, “We had a hard time getting started.”
After the first tournament the club held another qualifying round, allowing other players to try and earn a spot on the team for the next tournament. A few players were changed and slots for play were switched around based on scores from the qualifiers.
On Oct. 24, the team, including the new players, headed to River Oaks to take on SLCC again. Another alternate was called on to replace a player that was unable to make it to the tournament. Brett White was the new player to represent CEU. White had a good round and helped the team’s score immensely.
The team suffered a huge blow when their number-two player was unable to finish his round because he became ill. Burke who had not been feeling good before the tournament left after the 10th hole because he was too sick to continue play.
Club president Nelson, once again led the team, with a score of 81. About the second round, Nelson said, “We were just out played. There is nothing that we can do about that.” The team for the second round was made up of; Nelson number one, Burke number two, Peterson number three, Smith number four, David Osborne Jr. in the number five spot, Upton number six, and finally White, finishing in the seventh spot.
With two matches down, CEU can only expect more from the team and look for them to improve with every match they compete in. Another tournament is being scheduled for the team and will be played at Coral Canyon in St. George. Nelson hopes this tournament will be able to include more junior colleges than just SLCC.
