Men’s basketball showcases talent
After showing off their hops in the dunk contest at the Meet the Team Night Nov. 4, the College of Eastern Utah’s men’s basketball team traveled to Ephraim to play a tournament last weekend.
The EU men started off playing team Pro Look, a team made up of old Division 1 and professional players. CEU came out not intimidated and outshot team Pro Look 51 percent to 33 percent. Despite the better shooting by CEU they went into the locker-room at the half down 40-36.
In the second half CEU played much better, lead by Mike Scott and Aaron England’s scoring attack.

Second year Head Coach Chris Craig said, “Mike Scott was great in the second half and Aaron England gave us a huge lift offensively with his shooting.”
CEU shot an even better percent from the field in the second half shooting 44 percent from the field and 41 from three-point land. CEU managed to get to the line much more in the second half with 18 attempts from the line. At the end of the game, CEU came out with the W, 83-78.
Scott lead the scoring for CEU with 17 points, seven boards and five assists; followed by England who put up 15 points off the bench including three for three from behind the arc. Phillip Thomas was also in double figures with 13, and Darington Hobson garnered himself a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Stephan Franklin also had a good game with nine points and seven rebounds.
Craig said, “Pro Look Sports is a very good team composed of former D-1 and pro players. Our guys played decently hard and made plays down the stretch for the win.”
The Eagles next game was against Central Wyoming College. CEU never really had a problem handling CWC and played great defense holding them to only 7-31 from the field in the first half. CEU went into the half up 30-20.
Coach Craig said, “The best our guys had competed this year as far as effort, if we learn to play like that constantly, we could have a special year; if our guys settle for an average effort level we won’t have a good year, it’s as simple as that.”
In the second half, the game was much the same as the first with the exception of CWC shooting much better from the field. Despite the better shooting in the second half by CWC, they couldn’t get out of the hole they dug themselves in and CEU came out with a 66-52 win.
CEU shot 43 percent from the field in the game and 70 percent from the line, and out rebounded CWC 44-32 with Chandler Pearson leading the way with 12 boards. CEU also played great team ball getting 13 assists
Franklin had an amazing night from the field shooting eight for 16 from the field with 21 points and going five of six from the line. Pearson also had a good game scoring nine points followed by Marvin Thigpen with eight.
