Over Thanksgiving break College Eastern Utah’s women’s basketball team had anything but a break. EU played two games Nov. 28-29 against Glendale Community College of Arizona in Glendale.
Glendale, a very up tempo team, was a tough matchup for the lady Eagles, as Glendale averages in their previous games this season, 126 points. According to Coach Dave Paur, “Glendale wants to shoot a 100 shots and half of them threes.” The Glendale offense relied heavily on the three pointer, which, showed in the first half of Friday’s game. In that half alone, Glendale had eight buckets from behind the arch. The game was a rough one for the EU women, with 14 missed lay-ups and going one for 30 from three-point land. It seemed as if the iron had a lid on it. Despite the efforts of Savana Gines’ 12 points, Libby Alon’s 11 and Adriana Cordova’s 10, the Golden Eagles lost to Glendale’s 116 points with their 87.
Satuday’s game had much different results for both teams. EU came ready and anxious for revenge and to earn what they wanted on the hard wood. After being embarrassed by the Glendale offense the night before EU shut down Glendale’s three-point game and brought it inside. It is said that the best offense is defense, and while holding Glendale to five threes, EU brought the ball to the inside.
The Golden Eagles were led to a 87 to 80 victory over Glendale, with Amber strong scoring 11 points and a spectacular game from Kaylie Robison, finishing the game with a double double; scoring 27 points inside the arch, having five blocked shots and dominating the boards with 18 rebounds.
“Tonight, we were more patient on offense, that is why we slowed the game down,” said Paur. Their patience proved effective as they held a team that averaged 126 points a game to 80 points. EU only shot half as many times from behind the arch and shot nearly 10 percent better from the field.
The ladies will regroup this weekend as they face the Idaho All Stars on Saturday, Dec. 6 in the BDAC at 7:30 p.m. Their final game of the semester is on Saturday, Dec. 13 where both the men and women play the Salt Lake All Stars. The women play at 5:30 and the men play at 7:30 p.m.
