The College of Eastern Utah’s lady Eagles, split four Scenic West Athletic Conference games over the past two weeks at home against Colorado Northwestern Community College and dropping two games on the road against the always formidable College of Southern Idaho.
Coach Dave Paur had said that the CNCC games were going to be a springboard to help his team prepare for the games against CSI.
On Friday Jan. 30 at the Bunnell-Dmitrich Athletic Center the Eagles took on the CNCC Spartans. CEU looked dominant against lowly CNCC, winning 80-57. Vanessa Siqueiros led the Eagles in scoring with 14 points. Kaylie Robison also stood out for CEU; she racked up another double-double with 16 points, and 13 rebounds. Paur said that Robison has “great hands, she is a rebounding machine.” Livnat Alon also looked good on the court with seven assists and eight points.
On Saturday Jan. 31, CNCC came out looking for revenge. The first half was hard fought, and the Spartans pushed CEU to the limit. The lady Eagles came out fired up for the second half. Paur said he told the ladies at half time, “We’ve got to get better … you can’t take them for granted.” CEU looked like a different team in the second half, they ran rampant on CNCC and pushed the final score to 71-51.
Paur was looking to improve their defense against CNCC. The lady Eagles played well defensively with 17 team steals. Their season average for steals per game is 12. Paur said, “The second half Saturday was the best we’ve played.”
After the wins against SWAC whipping post CNCC, CEU headed north to face CSI. The Eagles struggled against the formidable CSI Eagles fell to them 86-62. CEU started out on the right foot and with two minutes left in the half, they were within three points. But by half time, CSI had pushed their lead to 11 points. Kaylie Robison once again lead the lady Eagles with 13 points, and 16 boards. But it was not enough and CEU lost the game 86-62.
As bad as it was for CEU on Friday, Saturday was worse. Paur said “We came out poorly.” The Eagles were plagued by poor shooting and they ended the first half with a dismal 20% shooting average. CEU imporved in the second half with a 48% shooting average, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the potent CSI team. Paur said of the Saturday game, “If you can’t shoot, you can’t win.” CEU was lead in scoring by Robison who had 16 points and five rebounds. Livnat Alon also played well for the ladies with 12 points and three assists.
The lady Eagles will head to Coeur d’Alene Idaho on Friday to take on the North Idaho College Cardinals. CEU will return to the BDAC the following weekend and play host to Snow College on Friday Feb. 20, and Saturday Feb. 21. The games will start at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, and 3 p.m. on Saturday.
