You just can’t buy health

I have spent the last couple months coming to a sickening realization; once your health is gone, you really have little left. We say we have money among other material possessions, but that gets us only so far in life. Without good health, material possessions become items that mean nothing.
You can see this in many different cases, most prominent in Utah is Larry H. Miller and his health. As many know, Miller has diabetes and it affected his life tremendously. Miller owns the Utah Jazz, car dealerships, the Utah Blaze and countless other businesses. But I bet if you ask him right now if they matter, he would probably say no. You see, Miller has had declining health in the last couple years. He had to have both of his legs amputated six inches below the knee because of complications with diabetes in January.
I don’t see how anyone could say that Miller has everything going for him now that his health failed. He passed all his businesses to his children so that they can start taking care of them for him. Miller’s material possessions have not been able to help him gain back his health, and never will.
Michael J. Fox is also another celebrity that has major health problems. Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease quite a while ago. He has become progressively worse over the years and will never be like he once was. Fox has tons of money from his films and sitcoms he has been a part of over the years. Fox was in his prime when he found out about this disease. Because Fox can no longer act, he crusades for money to help pay for research to find a cure for Parkinson’s.
Recently I found out that I also have a medical problem. I have something called hypothyroidism. Basically my thyroid is acting up and will never be normal. I have to take pills the rest of my life to make up for it. You know I don’t have as much money as Larry Miller and probably never will, but we can see that no matter who you are or what social class you come from, health will affect you.
I have also come to the frightening conclusion that this is the only thing that we can count on in our lives. We can count on our health to fail or falter eventually. When that time comes it doesn’t matter exactly what we have amassed to in our live. We could be the biggest celebrity in the world and the second we end up in a hospital bed we are the same as the guy in the bed next to us that has the same problem.
Money can only take us so far in life, and fame is the same way. Health is the one crucial element that matters and can take us the farthest in this lifetime. When we lose health we lose it forever. You can never go back to the way you were before you have a disease. It stays with you forever and you can never take it back. Everybody is always telling you to live in the moment because you never know when life will end. I would like to change that a little bit; live your life to the fullest because you never know when your health will fail and keep you from doing things.
