SWAC Day Three: Championship Games

Saturday night at the BDAC, the NIC lady Cardinals played the SLCC Bruins for the SWAC title. Camille Reynolds hit a three for the Cardinals to get things started. NIC jumps out to an early 7-2 lead with 18:41 left in the first half. SLCC’s Avi Burgess made a nice play on a fast break to cut the Cardinal lead to 9-6. Hale Holmstead put SLCC ahead by one with a nice cutting lay-up, it’s 12-11 Bruins.
The first half was close and at the first media timeout, NIC led 15-14 with 13:36 left in the half. Kama Griffits hit a three for NIC with 10:54 left, making it 22-17 in favor of the Cardinals.

Jamie Mokofisi is once again making her presence in the paint felt for SLCC. With 8:30 to go, NIC extended their lead to 30-19. With five minutes left in the first half and NIC had a 36-26 lead. Salt Lake closed the gap and trails by six with 3:30.
At halftime NIC built a commanding lead, 46-31. In the first half NIC was led by Camille Reynolds with 15 points. SCLCC was led by Holmstead and Mokofisi with six points each. The Bruins went 8-11 from the charity stripe.
NIC came out of the locker room strong and with 17 minutes in regulation NIC led 51-35. At the first media timeout, NIC still had the lead, 55-43. NIC had three players in double digits with Reynolds leading the pack with 17 and Tugce Canitez and Katie Sanders with 10.
Holmstead hit another three for the Bruins and cut the NIC lead to eight. Reynolds drained a three from way downtown for the Cardinals. It was an 11-point game with nine minutes left, NIC leads 66-55.
With five minutes left in the game and NIC had a 74-62 lead, but made some mental mistakes in the last few minutes.
With three minutes to go, SLCC capitalized on a series of NIC mistakes and cut the deficit to six. With a 1:10 left in the game, SLCC cut the NIC lead to four, 78-74. It appears to be all over now with 32 seconds left, NIC woke up and extended their lead to 81-74. The party has begun for the NIC women; with two seconds left they have an 86-76 lead. The NIC Women are the 2010 SWAC champions.
