PBL students continue legacy
Nine College of Eastern Utah students placed in the Utah PBL competition at its annual State Leadership Conference at the Ogden Eccles Conference Center on April 9-10. Students from Utah State University, Weber State University, Stevens Henager College, Utah Valley University, Dixie State College, Snow College and CEU competed in the two-day event whereas students took tests, gave presentations and were interviewed about subjects pertinent to the business world.

Nine College of Eastern Utah students placed in the Utah PBL competition at its annual State Leadership Conference at the Ogden Eccles Conference Center on April 9-10. Students from Utah State University, Weber State University, Stevens Henager College, Utah Valley University, Dixie State College, Snow College and CEU competed in the two-day event whereas students took tests, gave presentations and were interviewed about subjects pertinent to the business world.
Four first place awards were won by CEU including Kevin Howard who placed first in two events: cyber security and information management. Danielle Warner placed first in accounting principles while Skyler Hardy placed first in client services.
A second place award was earned by Hardy who teamed up with Olivia Hooper and Hubert Lee in management analysis and decision making.
Another second place was earned by Howard, Warner and Holly Martineau in business-decision making.
Howard’s fourth national’s placement came with a second place finish in networking concepts.
Howard, Warner, Martineau, Hooper, Hardy and Lee will all represent CEU at the National Leadership Conference in Nashville, Tenn., on July 9-12.
Only students taking first and second place at state quality for national competition. In addition to her first and second place finish, Warner earned third place in sales presentations.
Other state winners include Jeremiah Moore in justice administration, fourth; Ven Lima teamed up with Kelsey Wheeler and Lee, to earn fourth in emerging business issues. Hardy placed fourth in project management.
Fifth place awards went to Hardy in sports management and marketing, sales presentations while Warner placed in macroeconomics.
Howard placed sixth in future business executive, Warner in business law, Martineau in client services, Wheeler in impromptu speaking, and the team of Lee and Lima in human resources management.
Martineau placed eighth in accounting principles, Hooper places ninth in job interview and client services, and Hardy placed 10th in accounting principals.
CEU’s Business Club received the third place award for largest percentage increase in membership for the 2009-10 year.
According to Dr. Henning Olsen, CEU’s PBL Club members in accounting have placed in the top 10 each year for the past consecutive 32 years and have taken first place twice at national competitions. In the past 25 years, on a average, over half of CEU’s students who were entered in the accounting competition each year, placed in the top ten in the state of Utah for that year . Five students enter the accounting competition each year from CEU.
Olsen, Ron Vogel and David Cassidy serve as advisers to the club.
