S.E.C.

I am sure that the acronym is throwing everybody off. Especially since it is what we associate with one of the powerhouse college athletic conferences, the Southeastern Athletic Conference. The real question is, why is a sports writer choosing to write about the SEC if he is at a junior college in Price, Utah? Well I am not writing about the SEC in the sense of the conference; rather this will be a regularly syndicated column called Sports Editor’s Choice, or SEC for short.

Since we are unable as a sports staff to cover all of the sports stories that go on between every issue of “The Eagle,” this column will cover my top five sport-related stories that we will not be able to cover in full.
5- Tailgate Time
And so begins my favorite time of the year. College football officially started this last week and from now until December, teams and fans will be hoping for the glorified honor of winning the rivalry game, and dreaming of earning a BCS bowl-game bid. Here is to hoping for a season filled with those emotions that only college football can produce; jaw dropping amazement, the grief that causes college tough guys to cry, and the ever overwhelming feeling of joy when you win.
4- Put on a Helmet
The late and great John Wooden devoted the first practice of every year to teaching his players the fundamentals of basketball, like teaching them to put their socks on in such a way so that they would not get blisters on their feet. Maybe he should have had a summer camp for football players who don’t quite get the concept of putting on a helmet and buckling it. Come on guys, buckle your helmet or you can end up like Eli Manning and have a huge gash on your forehead that keeps you from playing because you forgot to snap on your chin strap.
3- The Little League
World Series
Japan ended up winning the Little League World Series against Hawaii this year with a final score of 4 to 1. It was a great contest to watch throughout the whole series, and the championship game was no exception. I was left with only one question though after the series, are all of those kids that stand close to six feet tall and throw the ball around 60 miles an hour really 12? I have never met a 12 year old that can do that, but I guess that whoever is in charge of the Little League World Series believes them.
2- Un-Sportsman like
Conduct
Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson tweeted recently that if he scores a touchdown in week one against the New England Patriots, he will be celebrating in a way that will surely never be forgotten. On his twitter page, he said, “If i am able to score week 1 in New England i will be taking the minute men rifle and firing as they do when the PATS score.” It makes me wonder though, since the Minutemen are supposed to protect their homes which would be the stadium at Foxborough, Mass., if they will let Ochocinco get his hands on one of those mock rifles. After all he would be a member of the opposing “army.”
1- Conference Shake-Up
Well, BYU has announced that they will be an independent team in the 2011-2012 season. Doesn’t seem like much with the rest of the shake ups that have been happening in the conferences, but the cherry on the top of this Sunday is that Ohio State and Michigan will no longer be in the same division of the Big Ten starting in 2011. Can we please stop switching conferences? I am having a hard time following this web of changes.
