The Eagle wins first, adds Facebook fan page, and launches new website
Utah State University-College of Eastern Utah’s The Eagle newspaper has been in the news lately with a first place finish in the American Scholastic Press Association competition, membership into the Utah Press Association, launching a newly designed website and adding a page on Facebook.
For the fifth consecutive year The Eagle, placed first at the ASPA 2010 competition. In addition to the first place, The Eagle was given special merit for scoring 935 points out of a possible 1,000. It was the only two-year small college to receive the special merit designation.

According to the chairperson of the ASPA’s judging committee, Richard M. Plass, Ph.D., The Eagle was an outstanding example of scholastic publication in format, content and presentation. Plass commended the staff for their dedication and concern for the improvement of their publications.
The newspaper received perfect scoring on content coverage, page design and editing. Other categories included general plan, art, advertising and illustrations, and creativity.
Placing first, behind CEU’s Eagle was Interrobang, Barton County Community College from Great Bend, Kan.
The 2009-10 editor of The Eagle was Erin Page from Bountiful with Susan Polster, Ph.D. as its adviser.

CEU’s newspaper recently was accepted into the Utah Press Association, a 111-year-old organization that represents Utah’s newspapers. It is the only two-year college newspaper admitted into the association. Its $1,000 membership fee was paid by the Sun Advocate. The newspaper’s general manager Rick Shaw, encouraged The Eagle staff members to join the association because of The Eagle’s quality and creativity.
Besides The Eagle, the Utah State Statesman, Weber State Signpost, University of Utah Chronicle, Utah Valley Review, Brigham Young University Daily Universe and Southern Utah University News are members of the association in addition to many Utah daily and weekly newspapers.
UPA represents Utah’s newspapers and helps people gain access to print media. Its purpose is to function as a collective voice and a legislative watch for all Utah-member newspapers. It assists the public as an economical placement service for news releases and advertising to the associate newspapers.
According to its website, “We are Utah’s oldest trade association, as an organization we represent Utah’s finest, most respected journalism. Utah Press Association annually recognizes excellence in our state’s newspapers and presents awards to industry leaders.”

Last, after eight years of the old website, The Eagle’s new website is live. Designed by Les Bowen, the USU-CEU website offers content in news, features, opinions and sports categories plus online advertising, larger photos, PDFs, recent comments and access to the Sun Advocate online. Bowen created a Facebook page for the newspaper which can be accessed at The Eagle Newspaper in the Facebook directory. Up-to-date feeds will be provided to all subscribers.
