Well folks, it has been a relatively good week in the sporting world. Upsets were to be found both in college and professional football. Major League Baseball finished its regular season and on Wednesday, Oct. 6, the play-offs started. Needless to say, it has been a week full of ups and downs but like always, things turned out alright.

5- Ochocinco’s are a no-no
Chad Ochocinco will definitely not be doing a victory dance after a blunder with his new breakfast cereal “Ochocinco’s.” The new breakfast cereal with the Cincinnati Bengals wide-receiver’s name and picture on it was meant to help a children’s charity; instead the number on the side of the box is a number for a phone-sex company. Callers thinking that they are helping children are greeted by a woman with a seductive voice and risqué suggestions. You would think that if you were going to put a product out on the shelves, you would check on special promotions like this to make sure they are correct.
4- Legend lost
George Blanda, one of the great football players to ever put on cleats and pads, died on Sept. 27, 2010. Blanda’s career went on for 26 seasons, in which he was the Player of the Year once, played in four Pro Bowls and scored 2,002 points. Blanda was drafted in 1949, and played quarterback, kicker and punter for four teams: the Chicago Bears, the Baltimore Colts, the Houston Oilers and finally the Oakland Raiders. Blanda retired in 1976, one month shy of his 49th birthday. I hate to throw this out there, but I really hope that Brett Favre doesn’t hang around until he is almost 49; at least Blanda was still contributing to his team at that age. Blanda was inducted to the Professional Football Hall of Fame in 1981.
3- Wet and wild Ryder
Well the Ryder Cup has come and gone, full of debacles, interesting uniforms and soggy rain gear that really didn’t do its job. The European team beat the United States team 14 1/2 to 13 1/2. Players from both teams had a hard time making putts and hitting shots that you would think professional golfers should be able to make from the middle of the fairway. In the player’s defense, with all of the rain and standing water on the fairways and greens, the course looked more like a swamp than a golf course.
Perhaps the greatest shot of the tournament came from Tiger Woods, who miraculously started looking more like himself on the golf course. Attempting to chip onto the green, Woods miss-hit the ball and nailed the lens of a cameraman. Although the lens was broken, Mark Pain, the photographer, was able to catch a rather impressive photo before the lens was shattered. Needless to say, the Europeans won their fourth-straight Ryder Cup at a course on European soil, so the pressure is on the U.S. to win at the next Ryder cup which will be at Medinah Country Club, just outside of Chicago in 2012.
2- Professional Football
goes pink
I never thought that I would see the day where professional football players wore pink on the field. The National Football League is going all out in supporting National Breast Cancer Awareness month. Throughout the month of October, coaches and their staff, along with referees and players will all be supporting the fight for a cure to breast cancer in their own way. All of the coaches will be wearing “Pins that touch hearts,” pink ribbons with the NFL shield on the sidelines throughout the month.
Many players are supporting the cause by wearing pink items with their normal game-day gear. Players have been seen wearing pink items including: cleats, wristbands, armbands, chinstraps, towels and even gloves. Make sure to what your favorite team is doing to support this cause and see what you can do to help. This really is the only good cause for football players to ever wear pink on the field.
1- It is October folks
October means crisp air, cooler weather, hot dogs and home runs in major league ballparks. Starting Wednesday, Oct. 6, the play-offs for Major League Baseball will start and the hunt for the World Series’ trophy will start to heat up. In the American League Division series, the Texas Rangers will play the Tampa Bay Rays, and the New York Yankees will play the Minnesota Twins.
For the National League Division series, it will be the Cincinnati Reds against the Philadelphia Phillies and the Atlanta Braves against the San Francisco Giants. Each team has something to prove this post-season and all want the glory of hoisting the World Series’ trophy and being called the 2010 World Champions. I am making the prediction that the World Series will come down to The New York Yankees and the San Francisco Giants, but we will just have to wait to see what will happen.
