Two baseball players named honorable mention

Even though College of Eastern Utah’s baseball team placed fifth last season, two of its athletes were named to the Scenic West Athletic Conference honorable mention team.
CEU’s first baseman Dusty Fackrell and designated hitter Austin Smith both were named honorable mention for the 2009-10 season.
Fackrell was a graduate of Kearns High School in Salt Lake City. He entered the season as third-year sophomore. He hit .304 in his final season at CEU. Fackrell was one of the team leaders both on the field and off the field.

He is now playing at Mesa College in Grand Junction, Colo. “Fackrell was one of the most intelligent baseball players that I have ever coached. He was a player that did everything that he could to win the ballgame. Dusty was not only a good ball player, but also another coach out on the field. He made certain that everything was covered on the field,” head coach Scott Madsen said.
Austin Smith transferred to CEU from Otero Junior College in Colorado. He was a graduate of Pine View High School in St. George, Utah. Smith finished the season hitting .289. After a tough injury that kept him out of the lineup for most of the preseason, he became one of the better hitters on the ball club.
“Even though we only had Austin for one season, he is considered one of the leaders on the team. He was a hard working player that did everything he could to become one of the better hitters in the SWAC conference. He was a player that seemed to get along well with everyone and kept the team on the right track,” Madsen said.
Coach of the year was Tim Chambers from College of Southern Nevada; player of the year was Bryce Harper, CSN; co-pitchers of the year were Donn Roach, CSN, and Kramer Champlin, Western Nevada College; reliever of the year was Tyler Duffin, College of Southern Idaho; and defensive player of the year was Kasey Carling, Salt Lake Community College.
