Historic Helper City — The Rio Theatre announces it’s premiere theatre season with the opening of “Wake Up and Smell the Coffee” written by Eric Bogosian and performed by professional actor and founder of The OtherSide Players, Morgan Lund.
The play is a series of monologues, all portrayed by Lund, and range from a Hollywood producer capitalizing on an airplane disaster to a spiritual guru with questionable motives to Satan as a modern-day salesman and many more.
Playwright Bogosian is an actor (best known as Captain Danny Ross on “Law and Order: Criminal Intent”) who is also known for his off-Broadway comedic monologues and social commentaries such as “Talk Radio,” which was also made into a film by the same name and directed by Oliver Stone.
A profoundly insightful and wickedly provocative performer, Obie Award winner Bogosian never shies away from the disturbing truths in life.
Frequently compared to comedic social commentators Lenny Bruce and Spalding Gray, Bogosian keeps his finger on the pulse of our collective fears while satirizing contemporary American values.
Lund says, “Bogosian’s characters aren’t angry, they are furious, funny, perplexed, neurotic and as brilliant as ever. It’s funny stuff!”
Commenting on the upcoming 2010-11 three-play season at the Rio, Lund says, “So, you don’t know what to expect? Well, we don’t either. But I invite you to join us for this new live entertainment adventure here in Castle Country.
He also adds, “The hallmark of The OtherSide Players season is variety. I look at ever show in our first theatre season as an opportunity to reach out to a different audience, perhaps people who didn’t grow up with the theatre tradition. I want them to see all the different styles of writing and the vitality of live theatre.”
Since the play tackles adult themes, parental discretion is recommended for children under 15 year of age.
“In ‘Wake Up…’, Bogosian is in top form, saying once again that in order to be truly alive you must see everything, especially the stuff most people work hard to avoid seeing.” – LA Times.
“…a glorious cacophony of voices that mimics the confusing complexity of life in the Information Age.” – Boston Globe.
“Hilariously funny and frighteningly familiar.” – The Boston Herald
