Fifty-two college guys came to the College of Eastern Utah this year with the hope of becoming a member of the 2010-2011 USU-CEU spring baseball team. The team has try-outs through out the fall ball season, where they can show their skill in practice from roughly 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, from late August to November.
Although the regular season doesn’t start until spring, the team competes against schools in games where the coaches are able to see what the players can do. Because of the size of the team, in most games they divide into two teams and play the opposing team twice. This gives the players the equal opportunity to play.
The team played Salt Lake Community College, (who they will play in the regular spring season) twice. They ended up taking a loss from SLCC both times. Other teams included The Price All-Stars, Carbon High School and the U of U club team.
In honor of the World Series, the team has split in two teams, for their own version of a the World Series. They scrimmage against each other, the teams of course, are the Giants and the Rangers. They play against each other for the title of this mini-series and the pride of their team. Like the real superstition of Brian Wilson of the San Francisco Giants not being able to shave his beard because of it being a lucky charm, the CEU “Giants” have all taken the vow not to shave till they win the whole series.
Coach Scott Madson plans on making cuts for the team sometime next week. The current team of 52 will be cut down literally in half, to a final team of 26.
Usually the guys who don’t make the team don’t stick around for second semester, so don’t count on seeing all 52 again. The coach admits to having an extensive try out process, with hopes that the team will be well put together and bring up the ante for the upcoming spring season.
