USU Eastern’s lady Eagles began their preseason games in Cedar City on Nov. 4 and 5, where they played Central Arizona College and Idaho All-Stars. On Nov. 10 through 12, the Lady Eagles played Northwest Community College, Midland College and Olds College. After three weeks of play their record is 2-3.
Central Arizona was tough team ranked seventh in the nation. Head coach Dave Paur said, “It was a game we should have won, but should have, what if, we lost by two and it was still a loss.” The team started playing hard and the half time score only had the Lady Eagles down by two with CAC leading 28-26.
Defense was the strong battle tactic. They were able to hold CAZ to 26 points in the second half. Eastern was a head when a technical foul allowed Central to tie up the game.
Paur said, “I don’t think it should have been called. It was a game breaking call that allowed the game to become tied.” The final scored was CAZ winning 54-52. “The end of game technical foul did us in. We lost by two, so still a loss. It was a good team effort. Everyone contributed in that game,” commented Coach Paur. Priscila Santos had 18 points and Abbie Kay contributed nine.
The Idaho All Stars was a club team made up of previous D-1 players. “They might be one of the best teams we play all year,” said Paur. The experienced four-year players had the Eagles scrambling. At halftime, the Lady Eagles were down by 10, 42-32.
“I think they took us out of our defense and made us panic,” comment Paur. Idaho scored 35 and Eastern 28. The second half ended 77-60 with the Idaho All Stars winning. “[Kaylee] Wipple played at the Universty of Utah and has only been out one year. The Idaho team was poised and shot well. They had previously beat Salt Lake Community College by 15,” said Paur. Lead scorers for the Lady Eagles were Santos with 24 and Amy Arbon with 18.
The weekend of Nov. 10-12 was a SLCC Tournament. Thursday the lady Eagles played Northwest Community College out of Powell, Wyo. The Lady Eagles had a solid defensive game, that kept Northwest out of their rhythm. “Northwest likes to penetrate, and they have a good man-to-man defense. We were bigger and kept control of defense,” said Paur.
The halftime score was Eastern up 34-27. “We were able to take away their three. They are usually a really good shooting team. Our defense did a good job controlling what Powell wanted to do and stopping them,” said Paur. Eastern was able to keep Northwest under 50 points. Final score was 63-44. Santos scored 31 and Hailee Perry had 11 points. The team also had 16 steals and five blocks.
Midland College was a tough game for the lady Eagles on Nov. 11. “I think they have an excellent post play. They had four or five posts that had great moves and they got it inside and got it in early,” commented Paur. At halftime, the lady Eagles were down 41-26. Defense was better in the second half. “They hurt us. I don’t think we’ll see a team with that many good post players. The second half was better,” said Coach Paur. Final score was 69-47 Midland.
Paur said, “We got down early and couldn’t get back up.” Midland was ranked third in the nation. Santos scored 29 and the team had five steals.
Saturday was a better day for the lady Eagles. Olds College from Canada was good team for the Eagles to end their weekend with.
“Canada was pressing team. They lacked the depth to compete with us,” said Coach Paur. First half had Eastern up 49-22. The Eagle defense kept Olds coming back into the game. They only scored 26 points. Santos had a great game. She set a new school record. She scored 46 points, beating the school record by four. “Priscila set a school record and had a great game,” commented Coach Paur. The team ended the game 90-48. Arbon and Caitlin Nelson had 12 and 10 points contributed to the Eagle total. The team racked up 25 steals and five blocks.
This next weekend of Nov. 17-19 the Lady Eagles travel to Wyoming. “Over all we have played a tough schedule and played two top ten nationally ranked teams. We head to Casper, Wyo., and play Casper College a top 20-ranked team. Our preseason has been filled with playing top ranked teams,” said Coach Paur.

Santos was reported to have said she wanted to go for 50 but was taken out of the game with time left on the clock. “Priscila set a school record and had a great game,” commented Paur. The team ended the game 90-48. Arbon 12 pointsand Caitlin Nelson finished with 10. The team also racked up 25 steals and 5 blocks.
