During winter break on Dec. 24, 2012, USU Eastern nursing student Penelope (Penny) Eleazar passed away due to heart failure after being sick with pneumonia while in California visiting family. She was in her final her semester before earning her RN.
Eleazar was a friend to all that she came into contact with. She held jobs in dining services and the testing center. Becky Archibald, director of dining services, said, “Penny arrived at work with a smile and a good word for all. She was very dedicated to her job and performing the task to her greatest ability. Penny was a great example of true friendship to everyone she met. Her love and joy for life touched everyone she passed. She will be deeply missed.”
Cathrin Alaei, testing center director, described Eleazar, “She was a good friend, a hard worker, and was always looking for way to help others. She will be missed by all who knew her.”
A memorial was held for Eleazar on Jan. 6. Friends shared memories of Eleazar and each mentioned how she was always happy and had a way of brightening anyone’s day.
A fund was set up where anyone wishing to donate to the Eleazar family could do so. Funds would go towards transporting Penny to her homeland for final resting. Fausett Mortuary estimates the cost of transport and burial at $7,000.
