You’ve Got Mail

The start of spring semester at USU Eastern came with a change to where students receive and send mail. With the SAC building being demolished, USU Eastern had to relocate The Eagle Station (post office) and chose to move it to the purchasing center north of the Jennifer Leavitt Student Center. This decision was made due to the center already being used for collecting the mail.
“[Moving The Eagle Station here] made a lot of sense. We have the regular receiving that we were distributing to the buildings,” Robyn Sheriff, director of purchasing said. “We are just unable to accommodate all of the mailboxes in this area, which is why we use the rotary centers. They seem to be working well.”
The new mailboxes are located in the JLSC for those students living in Sessions, Tucker, and Burtenshaw residence halls. For students living in Aaron Jones, the new mailboxes are in the main hallway on the first floor of AJ. The Eagle Station is open to pick up packages from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is closed for lunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
“We wanted to put the boxes in all the dorms, but they said no,” Sheriff said. “Some of the dorms are struggling for space for the students in the common area. In AJ they are right there in the doorway. It was an area that was available.”
The post office (PO) boxes used while the post office was in the SAC building were not transitioned to new locations, instead new boxes were built and installed in the student center and AJ. Each student who had a PO box was told to visit the new post office to exchange his or her old key for a new one in the new location. Over the break, Sheriff devised a numerical method for this transition and assigned a new box for each student. A few students have not exchanged their keys and received new boxes. All students who have not exchanged their keys and still wish to continue getting mail on campus, need to visit the new post office in the purchasing center and do so.
“I came up with a numbering scheme, we started at 100,” Sheriff said. “five hundreds and up are all in AJ. The lower numbers are going to fall through with all the other dorms. They are now a three-digit number instead of all starting with a five and being a four-digit number.”
The purchasing center had previously held purchasing, the police and a criminal justice instructor and a classroom. With the addition of The Eagle Station, there was not enough room for all. The police took over the criminal justice classroom and criminal justice moved to the Central Instructional Building. The area that was previously used by the police was renovated and changed into what is now the post office.
“They have moved everything for the police to where the criminal justice classroom was,” Sheriff said.
