Utah State Eastern’s Ashlyn Olivia Coleman, resides in Heber, Utah. A returning member of this year’s women’s basketball team and has started many games for the Eagles. She stands at 5 feet 10 inches tall and is a forward with a great deal of range, as well as can take it to the hole with two steps. She averages 4.1 points per game and 3.4 rebounds a game.
Coleman started playing basketball at 7 but got big into it at 12. It’s quite comical how she got involved into the game of basketball. It started because she wanted to be able to be around the boys and to be well acquainted with them.
“I remember I started playing because when I was younger I was really competitive in elementary school. I loved all the sports. I would go play football, soccer, basketball, track, anything that the boys would be playing because they were the only ones that would be competitive.” says Coleman, with a little bit of a chuckle in her voice.
Although some may think that Coleman had alternative reasons for wanting to get well acquainted through sports with the boys in her elementary school, she truly just had a love for being apart of something, something greater then herself.
She says “I love the idea of having a team. I have always been a fan of team. I have always been a fan of teamwork, and winning a game in that way. Also I, of course, love to compete and the love the physicality the game brings. Being aggressive and just giving it your all is something that everyone that plays can give.
Off the court, Coleman excels in the classrooms. Anyone that has ever met her knows that she can light up a room with her smile and personality. She’s the type of friend that would give her last pair of shoes off her feet away.
With this fun and giving attitude, it is no surprise that Coleman is interested in pursuing her degree in something to do with social work. Whether that be teaching or a counselor of sort that is yet to be determined.
As it is Coleman’s sophomore year and will be her last year at USU Eastern, she has the daunting task of deciding as to what she’ll do next year.
She says with great uncertainty, “I plan to continue to go to school…, really just working on a plan at the moment.”
One thing is sure, Coleman will continue to contribute greatly on the court and you can catch her in action for Sophomore night on Thursday, Feb. 16 at 5:30 p.m. .against Colorado Northwestern Community College at the BDAC.
