Eagles earn first 2 wins in conference

Over the past two weeks, the Utah State University Eastern Mens basketball team lost one game and won two in its conference. 

The Eagles played Salt Lake Community College, Colorado Northwestern Community College and the College of Southern Idaho. 

“I feel we are a hard working team and we go out there and give it our best,” said Dillon Sorensen. “We are a family.”

The season has been a typical season with ups and downs and opportunities for improvement. 

“We want to be playing our best basketball heading into the tournament,” said Assistant Coach Ray Jones.

Eagles lose to SLCC

The Eagles lost to Salt Lake Community College 77-70 on Jan. 16 in Price, Utah. In the first half, the Eagles scored 43 points while the Bruins scored 34 points. 

In the second half, the Eagles scored 27 points while the Bruins scored 43 points.

The top scorers of the game were Christian Haffner, Vojtech Ruzek and Donoval Avila. Haffner scored 15 points, one rebound and three assists. Ruzek scored 12 points, eight rebounds, two assists and two steals. Avila scored 11 points, six rebounds and four assists. 

Eastern made 36.8% of 3-pointers the whole game and 50% of free-throwsthe whole game. 

Eagles beat Colorado NW 

Eastern beat Colorado Northwestern CC 79-71 on Jan. 18 in Price, Utah, earning the teams first victory in conference play. 

USU Eastern scored 37 points in the first half while Colorado Northwestern scored 30. USU Eastern scored 42 points in the second half while Colorado Northwestern scored 42. 

The top scorers of the game were Christian Haffner, Donoval Avila and Dillon Sorensen. Haffner scored 17 points, six rebounds, two assists and three assists. Avila scored 14 points, two rebounds, five assists, two blocks and two steals. Sorensen scored 11 points, two rebounds, three assists and two steals. 

Eastern made 40% of three-pointers the whole game and 63.6% of free-throws the whole game.

Eagles defeat CSI

The Eagles absolutely destroyed the College of Southern Idaho 67-61 on Jan. 23 in Price, Utah, earning the team a second win in conference play. 

In the first half, USUE scored 30 points while CSI scored 32 points. USUE scored 37 points in the second half while CSI scored 29 points.
     The top scorers of the game were Turahn Thompson, Donoval Avila and Gabriel Olivrira. Turahn scored 15 points, four rebounds, two assists, one block and two steals. Avila scored 13 points, five rebounds and one block. Olivrira scored 11 points, 11 rebounds, one assist, two blocks and two steals.

“It was one of the funnest games that I have played in,” said Christain Haffner. “It was a really good win, a win we can build off of. The crowd was unbelievable.” 

Eastern scored 29% of 3-pointers during the whole game and 67% of free-throws the whole game.

“It was a good win for us, it’s a very competitive conference, every victory is important in a conference this competitive,” said Jones. 

The Eagles are 11-10 overall and 2-3 in conference play. They return to the court on Jan. 30, to play Snow College in Price, Utah, at the Bunnell Dmitrich Athletic Center.
