Marriage Equality for LGBTQ+ People

“We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal.” This statement was written into the U.S. Constitution to ensure the equal protection of all citizens. This was written during the time white people were practicing slavery. The people have taken the term to mean exactly what it says: all people are created equal no matter who they are, what they look like or who they love. 

Let’s say a couple made up of two men would like to get married and adopt a child. Based on the previous statement, it seems perfectly clear that the couple should be allowed to do those things. For some reason, this is a hard concept for people to grasp.

I completely understand  religious affiliation. If a gay couple makes you uncomfortable, just walk away and don’t pay attention. It is absolutely none of your business who or how someone chooses to love.  It is not in your control nor should it be. 

Can you imagine if someone outlawed straight marriages? A man and a woman would no longer be allowed to marry. The outrage would spread like wildfire. People would cry, would be frightened and would protest it more than anything before. 

That same thing is happening in the LGBTQ+ community. They feel unsafe everyday. They fear for their lives and this is one more thing that segregates them farther from the “normal.” They are fighting for equality, something that everyone deserves. 

Why does marriage equality always come up in politics? Is there a political standing? The real problem people have with marriage equality is that it goes against their religion. The Bible was interpreted by many to say that gay relationships are wrong and sinful while the literal translation is condemning pedophilia, they simply believe they are right and  are not willing to switch sides. The important concept is the separation between church and state so any time it is tried to put into political conversation, it can be immediately debunked.
