SLCC defeat women in SWAC tourney
The Utah State Eastern soccer team ended
its season with a hard-fought 2-0 loss to Salt
Lake Community College in the Region XVII
tournament.
The loss gave the Eagles a 9-7 overall
record, 7-5 in the Scenic West Athletic Conference.
The game was played at Snow College,
a neutral site, and was evenly matched with no
score through the first 20 minutes. That’s when
a header put SLCC up 1-0. The second goal
also came in the first half. Neither team scored
in the second half.
“I’m sad, but who wouldn’t be sad,” said
freshman defender Hannah Nichols. “I’m devastated
that we couldn’t have gone further, but
we put our hearts into this season and that’s
what matters.”
A week earlier, defender Shalee Heywood
scored two goals in the first half to lead USUE
to a 4-0 win over Christian Community College.
Two days later the Eagles played their
last home game against College of Southern
Nevada. It went into overtime before USUE
pulled out a 4-3 win.
The Eagles led 1-0 at half before CSN took
a 2-1 lead at the 65th minute. The Eagles tied the
game 2-2. The game continued back and forth,
CSN leading 3-2 until Kallie James scored the
tying goal to take the Game into OT.
“It’s hard to accept that the season is
over,” said team captain Maryn Stoddard, a
sophomore midfielder. “But I’m so proud of
my girls. It was a fulfilling season because of
how hard we worked and how much heart we
put into the game together.
Head Coach Jared Woodhouse said 2021
was his favorite season because of the culture
on the men’s and women’s teams.
