(The following contains spoilers for episodes 1-3 of “The Book of Boba Fett.”)

“The Book of Boba Fett” premiered on Disney+ on December 29th.

The show recaps, and then continues, the story of Boba Fett and the events of his life since “Return of the Jedi.” Star Wars fans have been eagerly awaiting the show since Boba Fett’s surprise reappearance in “The Mandalorian,” where the bounty hunter, who turned crime lord, was reintroduced as protagonist.

Fett first appeared in season one of “The Mandalorian.” He saved Fennec Shand at the end of an episode, although Fett’s identity wasn’t revealed until later when he hunted down Din Djarin in his search of his armor. In the same episode, it was revealed that Fennec had become his assistant, and the two promised to work with Djarin to get Grogu (Baby Yoda) back after his kidnapping.

“The Book of Boba Fett” begins right where Fett left off in the Mandalorian. In a brief scene towards the end of the series, he seizes Jabba the Hutt’s palace and establishes himself as a Crime Lord of the desert planet Tatooine.

Episode One is action-packed with little dialogue, and examines what Boba has begun doing around the spaceport settlement Mos Espa on Tatooine. A flashback plot line is introduced into the series, where Boba has been since he was swallowed by the sarlacc pit and presumed dead in “Return of the Jedi.”

The present-day plot line begins when Fett accepts tributes from the town from his overlook in his new palace. He has been sworn to protect the town as daimyo, and whoever pays tribute to his presence. He visits a few establishments before being attacked by a cult of assassins in the middle of the town. From there, he is escorted back to the bacta healing tank in his palace, where he has been having dreams of his past.

Flashbacks begin to answer the question that Star Wars fans have been asking for years: “How did Boba Fett survive the sarlacc pit?” The answer: He used his high quality armor and flame thrower to incinerate his way out before climbing to the surface. From there, he collapses. His armor is stolen by jawas, and he is taken slave by the alien race of the Tusken raiders.

Throughout the episode he earns their respect, and they are presented the way they are in “The Mandalorian.” They are reluctant and misunderstood, but loyal allies.

“The Book of Boba Fett” was first announced at the end of December 2020, and it was filmed through most of 2021. The show was written by Jon Favreu, creator of “The Mandalorian.”

An outspoken few have called “The Book of Boba Fett” the worst piece of Star Wars TV ever written.” With the exception of the protagonist Bob Fett, characters are poorly developed.

Controversy surrounds episode three of “The Book of Boba Fett” due to the introduction of characters who, as yet, don’t fit thematically.  There is an abrupt end to the plot line with the Tusken Raiders, but it has largely been accepted by critics as a successful series. They give it 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, but the audience score is 68%. It has eight stars on IMDb.

The series has seven episodes and scheduled to drop each Wednesday. The last drops February 9.
