Movie Review: The Lie

The final moments of the movie reveal an insane plot twist, then an abrupt ending leaving you with not one, but two cliffhangers.

The Lie is a thrilling movie that will keep you on the edge of your seat. It is full of crazy events that will have you questioning everything you thought you knew. Joey King plays the main character, Kayla. Kayla is a teenage girl whose parents are divorced. In this film Kayla’s father Jay, played by Peter Sarsgaard, is driving Kayla to her ballet camp. As they are driving they see Kayla’s friend on the side of the road. Kayla yells at her dad to pull over, the two pick up Kayla’s friend Brittany and continue their drive. Pretty soon it is shown that Brittany isn’t a very good guest. She begins to flirt with Jay and act very weird. Brittany then demands that Jay pull over so that she can use the restroom, the two girls run out into the woods and slowly disappear into the tree line.

After the girls have been gone for a while, Jay begins to get worried. He starts walking in the same direction the girls went. When he doesn’t see or hear them, he begins yelling their names. After a few minutes of frantic searching Jay hears a scream. When he runs towards the scream he soon sees his daughter sitting on the edge of a bridge–without Brittany. Frantically he screams asking Kayla where her friend is. Kayla looks at her father in a frantic state and says she pushed her.

Jay begins searching the river and surrounding areas for Brittany’s body, but the only thing the two find is her purse. Scared and frantic, the two go to visit Kayla’s mom, Rebecca, who is an attorney. Back at their house Kayla tells Rebecca that she murdered her friend.

Rebecca and Jay are in distress trying to figure out what to do, while Kayla is carrying on with her everyday life, acting like nothing happened. Soon, Brittany’s father, Sam, realizes that Brittany and Kayla didn’t make it to the ballet retreat. Sam gets suspicious of Kayla and her parents and begins to ask questions. When Rebecca lies to Sam and gets caught, Jay and Rebecca decide to take things into their own hands. The last part of the movie consists of multiple twists and turns that will change the fate of Kayla and her parents forever. The final moments of the movie reveal an insane plot twist, then an abrupt ending leaving you with not one, but two cliffhangers. I highly recommend this movie and suggest that you watch it if you want to see just how crazy it truly is.
