The Last of Us is a video game franchise adapted into a television series. So far there have only been two episodes that have been released. The story follows a man named Joel, who has gone through a lot from the start to where the story is now. Joel’s motivation is the loss of his daughter, which took place the first night of the outbreak.
The outbreak is caused by a fungus named Cordyceps, which is a real fungus that affects ants. A lot of the “zombie” apocalypse movies and tv shows are almost entirely based off of fiction. Having these zombies based off of something that is real and adds to the fear factor.
In the first episode of the show we see Joel and his daughter’s relationship and parts of their lives before the outbreak. We see Joel take out one of the zombies in front of his daughter, and it makes her cry since she doesn’t understand what’s going on. They try to get out of the city, but they get into a car accident leaving Joel’s daughter unable to walk. She’s shot and killed when a soldier is given an order to execute them to try and stop the spread. Joel gets away unharmed.
The series of events serves to establish Joel and his motivations before a 20 year time jump. In the show’s present day, we see Joel in a community, but he is forced to leave when he is given a girl, Ellie, who can save the world. Joel is hesitant at first but decides that it might be for the best, and they leave the walls leading to a bunch of danger.
The show and the game have almost identical starts which is cool and adds to the overall effect. Fans have really been enjoying the show, but are left wondering if it will follow the game or have new outcomes?
The cast is amazing with Pedro Pascal leading the show as Joel. When I heard that he was going to be playing a complex character I knew the show would be good. After watching the first two episodes, I can tell they are going to make this show one of the best. Most shows or movies that are based off of games usually get bad reviews, but so far The Last of Us is doing a really good job.
