The Last of Us is an HBO Max series based off of a video game of the same name. The story is about a man named Joel who lost his daughter at the beginning of the Cordyceps zombie pandemic. 20 years later, he is sent on a mission to The Firefly’s lab to get Ellie, who is immune to Cordyceps.
Throughout the series, we see Joel become a father figure to Ellie. We see him finally show just how much he cares for her in the series finale when he decides to save Ellie instead of the entire world. The growth of both of these characters is beautiful. We see this guy who doesn’t trust anyone turn into this man who would give his life to protect this random girl who just walked into his life. This show is branded as a zombie show, which it is, but that’s not the focus. It really is more focused on these 2 characters becoming family.
I love how the show handles the progression, it’s not rushed but also doesn’t take too long. The show does a great job of balancing all its aspects. There’s elements of horror, drama, comedy, and action. The show is made for everyone whether or not you’re normally the kind of person who watches post-apocalyptic shows. Everyone should watch it.
Even if you’ve played the games, it’s still entertaining. Even if you think you know what will go down, you’re going to get something similar but different. Pedro Pascal does an amazing job of playing adopted fathers in shows. He conveys the emotions of Joel so well that it really puts you in the show. He does as good of a job in The Last of Us as he does The Mandolorian. Bella Ramsey does a great job of playing Ellie, she also conveys Ellie’s attitude so well that it’s hard to believe she’s not the character herself. Putting those two together was a great decision from the directors.
Without giving too much away, every episode handles a new problem the two of them
have to face. A lot of the time it’s super dangerous and nerve racking, and sometimes it’s as simple as getting lost. Regardless, every episode is really entertaining. I personally am super excited to watch season two when that comes out, I’m extra excited to see how much of the second game they use and how they handle certain scenes.
