Happy Gilmore: The best golf movie of all-time?
In the movie, “Happy Gilmore” the main character’s name is Happy Gilmore, played by the one and only Adam Sandler. In the movie he plays as a guy who loves hockey more than anything. His dad got him into the game when he was a kid, and his dad was so obsessed with hockey his mom left them and moved away to Egypt where there was not a hockey rink anywhere near. Shortly after his dad died from a slapshot at a hockey game. He was sent off to live with his grandma who was the sweetest old lady. She always supported him even though he wasn’t good.
After the introduction it kicks off with Happy’s hockey tryouts. He is the worst skater on the ice by far, but boy does he have a crazy slapshot. During the tryout he was told he wouldn’t make the team again, so he decided to beat the coaches up. The team tried to defend them, but he beat them all up. Then after the hockey tryouts he goes to the golf range to take his anger out on the golf ball and realizes he can hit a golf ball more than 400 yards (which is way longer than professionals can). A former golf pro saw Happy do this and he knew he could change his life. Happy’s grandma’s house was being taken by the IRS for failing to pay taxes and he knew the only way to get her house back was to make a bunch of money playing golf. It took Chubbs (the pro) a lot of convincing, but he finally got Happy to agree to play golf. Chubbs trained Happy to beat the favorite to win Shooter McGavin. It was a long road of tournaments but Happy finally beat Shooter to win the Masters.
What makes this Adam Sandler comedy so great is that it is a true underdog story. It teaches lessons about determination, the importance of doing things for family, and perseverance. During the movie Happy had to learn not only how to play the game but how to play it the right way. He went from being a terrible hockey player to a national champion in golf. A lesson I took away from this is that someone will always find something they are good at if they look hard enough. Even though this is a golf movie, there is something for everyone in this one. There are laughs that will make your stomach hurt, a perfect underdog story, and I mean Adam Sandler is the main character. This movie will always be a classic in my eyes and one that you can watch repeatedly.
In conclusion, this is some of Adam Sandler’s best work. At the end of the day if you need a good laugh “Happy Gilmore” will always hit home with a good laugh. The great music track, the great actors, and the great story line are what make this movie one that you will quote and watch whenever you get the chance. This movie will always be a classic and is one of the reasons Adam Sandler is a legend in the movie business.
