Women’s basketball season comes to an end
Utah State University Eastern Eagles started the regional tournament off hot as they took on the No. 1 seed Salt Lake Community College in a huge win 60-58. The Eagles started the game off slow as they trailed the first two quarters until things kicked into gear the rest of the game. Japrix Weaver was a huge key in this game as she was the leading scorer for Utah State Eastern with 14 points and 2 huge steals which contributed to points.
Summer Christensen and Annie Stinar were also big keys into this win, Summer Christensen with nine points, four assists, and five rebounds. Annie Stinar came off the bench and made a big role as she scored six points in 14 minutes of the game. Stinar and Christensen both with a combined four three-pointers made in big moments of the game.
There was a lot of pressure throughout the whole game as Utah State Eastern gave up 19 turnovers, but they always managed to come back and fight back the whole game. Ellie Esplin was also a big role in this team win as Esplin scored seven points, Esplin with one of the biggest moments of the game as the Eagles were up by one with 40 seconds left in the game she knocks down a huge three-pointer to help secure the lead and the game as the Eagles won, 60-58.
Utah State University Eastern Lady Eagles took on the College of Southern Idaho in the Scenic West Athletic Conference championship game on Mar. 16. The Eagles started off slower in this game as the College of Southern Idaho outscored Eastern in the first, third, and fourth quarter in this dog fight. The College of Southern Idaho outplayed Utah State in field Goals, three-pointers, and rebounds.
Some of the key players in this game for Utah State were Summer Christensen and Olivia Nielson as they both had 13 points which was the team high for the Eagles as well as 13 rebounds combined. Hadley Humphreys had a day for herself as she had a double-double in the game with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Ellie Esplin was also a big part of this game as Esplin scored 8 points along with two big assists.
The Lady Eagles couldn’t hold on as they trailed at the final buzzer 53-56 making the College of Southern Idaho the SWAC Regional Champions. Some of the highlights from the College of Southern Idaho players were Jamisyn Heaton who also won the MVP of the tournament, Heaton had a team high of 16 points along with 11 rebounds making it a double-double. Mariah Mons and Taylor Johnson both with double digit points with 10 to help the team as well as 10 rebounds between the both to contribute.
This closes out the season for the Utah State Eastern Lady Eagles as they had an outstanding season of 21 wins and only six losses.
