The opportunity to volunteer locally

By Kylie Jones

Volunteering is one of the most rewarding human actions. We witness opportunities to show kindness every day, whether it’s holding the door for the person behind us, carrying someone’s gallon of milk to their car when they forgot it, or simply offering a smile to a passerby.

No matter how big the act is, each one is equally important. Price offers many of these volunteer opportunities.

The Carbon County Animal Shelter requires volunteers to complete applications to be approved. Once approved, volunteers help the animals with anything they need, such as grooming, feeding, or just playing with them.

Pinnacle Nursing and Rehabilitation Center has a volunteer program for those interested in playing bingo with the tenants. This is a great opportunity to connect with local senior citizens.

The Boys and Girls Club has a program where volunteers can help members with their homework. This enables students to gain confidence in their academic skills and complete their necessary work. Those who are interested in volunteering more than once will need to obtain a background check.

Carbon Caring for Kids is a non-profit organization that assists students in getting food on the weekends and holidays. The organization puts together food kits for students in Carbon and Emery counties each weekend and holiday. The community comes together to donate food to this cause every year.

Marcy Loveless is partnering with the Sun Center at Utah State University Eastern to have students help prep kits and create thankful flyers on Tuesday mornings.

Along with all the wonderful opportunities that are available in our community, there are thousands of resources online that are in search of willing volunteers every day. Some of these organizations help students afford schooling, build safe ways for communities to obtain clean water, and help provide medical care to those who wouldn’t be able to get it.

Volunteers are needed for projects worldwide, whether making a donation or helping rebuild after a natural disaster. Lucius Annaeus Seneca once said, “Wherever there is a human being, there is an opportunity for kindness.”
