USU Eastern athlete spotlight: Madelin Newbold
Madelin Newbold is a Freshman at Utah State University Eastern. She graduated from Corner Canyon High School before coming to Price.
Brown plays Right Side Hitter for the women’s volleyball team here at USUE. Newbold wears jersey number 15. Newbold was asked about her experience so far here at USU Eastern. She said, “I like how small it is, because I get to know a lot more people.”
Newbold’s position of Right Side Hitter is an equally offensive and defensive position. They are responsible for blocking the opposing team’s attacks, passing the ball, and attacking back.
All on their side of the court. It is a tricky position that requires a lot of focus and split-second decisions. When asked what her favorite part of her position was, Newbold said, “Getting a really good block is my favorite.”
Newbold was asked how she feels about being a part of the USUE volleyball team. She said, “I’ve really loved it! Everyone is really nice and inclusive. I love the coaches. They’re always punching us to get better, but also take care of us and make sure that we’re doing well.”
Newbold was also asked what her favorite thing the team has done so far was. She said, “My favorite was probably going to Florida as a team.” In Florida, the USUE volleyball team had quite a great showing. They won three of the four matches that they played. Newbold was asked what made Florida so fun for her and the team outside of playing volleyball. Newbold said, “There was one night we went and saw the sunset on the beach. It was really pretty and I loved being there with the team.”
Newbold was asked about her favorite current achievement. She responded, “That I get to play in college. I’ve worked really hard to get here. Making that dream come true feels really good.”
Newbold has a strong work ethic and a high drive to succeed. This is highlighted by the fact that she likes longer games. When asked why, she stated, “I feel like I want to keep punching because that means the other team is doing well and punching us. So it makes me want to play better.”
