USU Eastern athlete feature: Avery Sanders
Avery Sanders is a sophomore at Utah State University Eastern and plays on the Women’s Basketball team. Sanders graduated from Syracuse High School before coming to USUE.
“My favorite thing about being on the team here is obviously just the girls,” Sanders said. “It is a smaller town, so I feel like we spend a lot of time together. Just like finding things to do with basketball and outside of basketball. We really become a family, just from being together all the time.”
Sanders was also asked about her favorite accomplishment as a basketball player. “I would say my favorite accomplishment is just like those big wins as a team,” Sanders said. “I feel like that really makes all of our hard work pay off. In high school, I think it was the second round, we had a pretty big win.”
This year, USUE’s women’s basketball team has an overall record of 7-4. While we are not yet too deep into this season, Sanders has had a great start. Sanders was asked what goals she was hoping to accomplish this season. “Just to win,” Sanders said. “I think our goal as a team is to win that region championship and to just work hard every day for that.”
“My favorite part about playing basketball is the competitiveness of it,” Sanders said. “ Obviously, I love to win. But it gives me an opportunity to push myself hard. It’s very rewarding when you do push yourself and see those rewards. But, also just being part of the girls and being a family.” She was also asked about her future plans for basketball. “My goal is to play on,” Sanders replied, “Since it is only two years here, my goal is definitely to play on after this.”
