Beach added to men’s basketball coaching staff at Fresno State

FRESNO, Calif. – Fresno State head basketball coach Ray Lopes announced the hiring of Guy Beach as an assistant coach. Beach comes to the Bulldogs from the College of Eastern Utah, where he coached for seven years as an assistant and two years as head from 1988-97.
“We are very excited about having Guy Beach join our basketball family,” head coach Ray Lopes said. “He brings a wealth of Division I experience as well as head coaching experience. That is very important to me. Plus, he’s a great person who I think is a great fit to our program and our staff.”
He has spent the past two seasons as head coach at the College of Southern Idaho (Twin Falls, Idaho), Beach led the Golden Eagles to a 52-12 record and back-to-back appearances in the Region 18 Championships.
At CEU during the 1995-97 seasons, he compiled a 51-13 record. During his second year, Beach led the Golden Eagles to their only conference title in program history. He also served as an assistant at CEU for seven seasons before becoming the school’s head coach.
In his four years as a JC head coach, Beach recorded a 103-25 record.
A 1988 graduate of Weber State, Beach has Division I assistant coaching experience at Weber State, where he served as an assistant from 1997-99, including a stint as the associate head coach for five months in 1999. From there, he moved to UTEP to serve as an assistant coach from 1999-01, leaving to accept the head coaching position at the College of Southern Idaho.
“Everywhere Guy has been, he has been successful,” Lopes said. “He was a tremendous assistant at Weber State and UTEP and a very good head coach at Eastern Utah and Southern Idaho. We are really looking forward to him adding to our staff as a great coach and recruiter.”
Beach played college basketball at Lassen (Susanville, Calif.) Junior College, where he was named all-conference and all-state in 1983-84. From there, he played at Weber State and was named his team’s most inspirational player and team captain in 1986.
As a Bulldog coach, Beach will play under head Coach Lopes who was named WAC Coach of the Year and Rookie Coach of the Year by CBSSportsline.com last season. Lopes, who is entering his second year at Fresno, took his team to a 20-8 record and first place finish in the WAC last season. He took over as head coach for the legendary Jerry Tarkanian.
