CEU men’s basketball team is ready

When the CEU men’s basketball team takes the court for the start of the 2003-2004 season, the team will include dramatically different player personnel from last year’s 18-win team.
The Golden Eagles expect 10 sophomores and five freshmen to suit up and participate come game time on November 1. In addition, six players will red shirt this year.
Only one player that saw game action last season returns to the team, co-captain Chris Langhorne. Langhorne averaged double figure scoring along with three rebounds and three assists per game for the Eagles. He commented, ” We have a lot of new players, but we play and act as if we’ve known each other for years. Our nucleus of players have plenty of college basketball experience and our preparation for this season has been very promising.”
Also, sophomore Tyrone Shephard and freshman Chris Anderson return to the CEU basketball team despite not participating in games last season. And 12 players have transferred to CEU from other college basketball programs.
Men’s head basketball coach Bryan Zollinger anticipates an outstanding season for his new look team. He stated, “When I recruited this group, I was looking not only for good athletes, but also players who have a good work ethic, great character, and are willing to use discretion in their decision making on and off the court.”
He added, “I feel positive about this season. In comparison to last year’s team, we have better perimeter shooting ability, more strength inside, and our team chemistry is dramatically improved. This group of players have a lot of enthusiasm and it’s a pleasure to work with them.”
The feeling is mutual. CEU’s players agree that Coach Zollinger has returned this year rejuvenated, and has been innovative in his coaching theories.
Two CEU players have already committed to play at Division I basketball programs come next Fall.
Forward Chris Anderson has committed to the University of Wyoming, and guard Mike Kirkpatrick will attend the University of San Diego.
However, although the two players are excited about their future endeavors, their priority remains at CEU. Kirkpatrick commented, “Right now my focus is on helping this team be successful.”
The Golden Eagles’ season opener is Saturday, November 1 at 7:30 p.m. in the BDAC.
