The state of Utah and State Board of Regents have created the Terrel H. Bell Teaching Incentive Loan Program (TIL) to help assist anyone interested in becoming a teacher.   The TIL program can provide financial aid to outstanding students who will follow a degree in education.
The TIL program will fund students with full-time tuition and general fees for up to eight years or until  the  teaching  certificate requirement has been met.   The funds can be used at any participating Utah institution, and can only be awarded to qualifying students living in Utah.  If the students continue teaching in Utah after receiving certification, the loan may be forgiven.
The students must be high school seniors or have completed required amount of credit hours designated by the college to qualify.   To continue eligibility, the students must meet the academic standards for completing the teacher education program and  have to  continue a full-time schedule each semester.
For high school senior, applications are available at their school counselor’s office, the State  Office of Education, or on-line.    The application has to be returned to the State Office of Education by March 31  to be considered.   Post-secondary students can contact their college for information.
For  students attending the  College of Eastern Utah, contact Phil Brown at 637-2120 ext. 5206 or [email protected].   Application deadline is March 1.
The TIL program can cover full tuition and fees at CEU, Dixie, Salt Lake Community, Snow, Southern Utah, University of Utah, Utah State, Utah Valley State, and Weber.   Tuition and fees are not covered in full at Brigham Young University or Westminister.
For  students who chose to teach outside of Utah,  monthly payment plans are based on a 10-year repayment period.   Minimium monthly payments are $50 and interest is fixed at 9%.   For those who remain in Utah,   a year of the loan obligation can be forgiven for each completed year of teaching.
