The award winners for this year’s student art show were revealed at the opening reception held at Gallery East, April 16. A total of $550 in cash and prizes were awarded to nine student artists.
The top three winners are: first place – Latasha Young, “Jack,” graphics, $100 CEU Bookstore gift certificate; second place – Paul Nieminen, “Abandoned,” print, $75; third place – Cory Newton, ceramics, $75.
The $50 winners include: Deanna Carlson, “Standing Tall,” ceramics; Nathan Jensen, “Apheleon Anatomy,” painting; Mariann Valentine, “Drilled,” drawing; Janeil Jensen, “Untitled” (Keys), photography; Zac McCormick, “McDonalds,” print; Christine Trease, “To Go,” graphics.
The student show was juried by Anthony Lott, CEU San Juan art professor. In a juror’s statement prepared by Lott prior to the opening reception, he stated: “I did not necessarily give an award for outstanding technical feats … or for the obvious labor that went into a piece. Many of the images or forms which were given awards were fairly simple statements made gracefully.”
Lott also expressed his hope that all participants would continue to create more work and realize that the awards were a result of his own whim and opinion.
CEU President Ryan Thomas stated: “I’m really proud of the students who have been included in the show. The artwork is very mature. I’m also impressed with the art faculty and what they do. They care so much about their students.”
Gallery Director, Brent Haddock stated: “We would like to thank our students for a wonderful year. We had a fantastic response to the opening reception with approximately 200 people in attendance and numerous pieces were purchased. We also wish to express our gratitude to the Thomas’ for their generosity and support of the arts.”
The student art show ends Friday, April 23.
