Vote Bush for Heisman

With the college football season past its halfway point, the debate has begun. Which player will win the Heisman Trophy? The top contenders for this year’s Heisman Trophy are Vince Young, QB from Texas; Reggie Bush, RB from University of Southern California; Matt Leinart, QB from USC; and Brady Quinn, QB from Notre Dame.
“If you’ve got a linebacker covering him, you might as well start singing their [USC] fight song,” is what Washington State University’s head football coach Bill Doba had to say when asked about Bush. In my mind, he is the clear favorite. He has already improved upon his season last year, in which he was a fan favorite for Heisman but lost out to his teammate Leinart. Last season saw Bush rush 908 yards, scoring six touchdowns. Already this season he has rushed 1,022 yards scoring 11 touchdowns so far. Bush can also be used as a receiver, this year he has 27 receptions for 311 yards.
The best description of Bush can be found on www.usctrojans.com, “the electrifying, multipurpose Bush, who brings flash and dash with his incredible speed and moves, once again will be used in a variety of roles as a senior in 2005: at tailback, split out as a receiver and returning punts and kicks. He’s a leading candidate for the Heisman Trophy and Doak Walker Award, as well as to repeat as an All-American first teamer.”
What makes Bush a Heisman hero is the intangibles. His leadership, never say die attitude and the fact that the momentum of entire games can change in one play if Bush touches the ball. No other player can bring that to the table. Many times this season when USC was losing, Bush would tear off a 60-yard run, either scoring or putting the Trojans in good position to score.
At last year’s Heisman Trophy ceremony he was asked about being a Heisman candidate, “I’ll be back next year,” he said. Bush expects to go out and have an amazing game everyday. “I expect great things out of myself. I expect to make great plays, great moves. In my mind, I can never be good enough … It just comes with the territory of making the most of what God has given you. I’m just trying to make the most out of a blessing I was given.”
