Judge Memorial, Weber, Fremont take top honors at CEU mediafest

Recently The Eagle newspaper sponsored a high-school journalism competition and media day for all high schools in the state. Every Utah high school newspaper and yearbook staff was sent an invitation to submit work in 12 categories. The first place winners of each category receives a full-tuition CEU scholarship and The Eagle will offer partial journalism scholarships to other winners.

Recently The Eagle newspaper sponsored a high-school journalism competition and media day for all high schools in the state. Every Utah high school newspaper and yearbook staff was sent an invitation to submit work in 12 categories. The first place winners of each category receives a full-tuition CEU scholarship and The Eagle will offer partial journalism scholarships to other winners.
Schools submitting entries included Weber High School, Carbon High School, Spanish Fork High School, Grantsville High School, San Juan High School, Judge Memorial Catholic High School, Delta High School,San Juan High School, Fremont High School and Layton High School.
In the opinion editorial category first place went to Matt Jeffs of Weber, second went to Heather Stevens of Spanish Fork and Chase D’Ambrosio from Carbon won third place. Honorable mentions for opinion editorial went to Rebecca Moses of San Juan, Daniellle Shook from Carbon and Holly Hughes from Carbon.
Justin Bogue from Judge Memorial won first place in the news category. Cariss Hohman from Weber took second and Katie Stitt won third place. She is also from Weber High School.
In sports, Weber’s Corey Calder took first place with second going to Sharon Robinson of Delta. Third place went to Jared Pfost of Weber and Kara Nelson from Spanish Fork received an honorable mention.
In the feature story category, first place went to Kayla McBride. Second went to Matt Jeffs and third to McKell Sorenson. All three are from Weber High School.
Matt Clyde from Spanish Fork won first place in the photography category. Jami Phillips, also from Spanish Fork, took second and third went to Alex Burringo from Grantsville. Donovan Smith from Granstville received an honorable mention.
Preston Morgan from Carbon won first place in the cartoon category, Rachael Boyack from Carbon took first place in art design.
In the page layout category, Chris Tsoufakis and John Hawkins from Judge Memorial took first place. Second place went to Alicia Sherman from Grantsville and third went to Carbon’s Robert Cottam.
In the overall layout (newspaper) category, The Bulldog Press from Judge Memorial Catholic High School won first place. The Weber Warrior News from Weber High School took second and third went to the CarbonNation from Carbon High School.
The Bulldog Press also won first place in front page layout. The Paw Print from Fremont High School took second and third went to the CarbonNation.
In the overall layout category (yearbook) the Lancer from Layton High School took first and the Spanish Fork High School Spaniard won second place.
In cover design the Spaniard took first and the Lancer took second place.
“This is the second year we have offered the contest and the quality of articles, photos, layouts and design keeps raising the bar of excellence. There was some impressive work submitted,” Dr, Susan Polster, contest cooridnator said.
“Each year more high school journalists enter the contest, thus the competition automatically gets better,” she added. “Utah is producing some great high school journalists which will augment every college program.
“Our goal is to grow by 10 percent every year in the number of schools competing. And with the ability to offer participant’s scholarships, we think it is a sweet deal for students and the College of Eastern Utah. We’ve always had a quality program and won lots of awards, so this is another way to introduce students to CEU’s program,” Polster said.
